Thomas Copland was born about 1772 in Killinchy, DOW, IRL. (He is given as 60 in the 1841 census which according to the enumerator's instructions would give his DOB as from 1777 to 1781). He was the son of Edward Copland and Mary McGill. In addition, Thomas has also been reported to have been born about 1774 in IRL; and about 1791 at IRL (1851 census).

Thomas Copland was a labourer at Killinchy, DOW, IRL.

Thomas Copland was a labourer at Rathfrilland, DOW, IRE.

Thomas Copland was a labourer at Killyleagh, DOW, IRE.

Thomas served in the military as a calvaryman in the 5th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards from 18 September 1795 to 22 December 1881 at Killinchy, DOW, IRL. His enlistment papers state that he was a 23 year old labourer from the town of Killinchy in the parish of Killinchy His discharge papers, which he signed with a very shoogly cross, gave his age as 37. The Dragoon Guards were an elite dual-purpose regiments of "mounted infantry", who were armed with muskets, bayonets and sabres and mounted on massive horses. They were trained to ride into battle, and fight like infantry, but also to act as heavy cavalry, smashing their way by brute force through enemy formations of infantry and artillery.. To be crushed by one of these horses would have had extremely serious consequences. The Dragoons were also used within Britain as a police force to control political and economic unrest.

Thomas Copland lived in Hythe, KEN, ENG, Although the 5th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards was an Irish Regiment they appear to have been based at a barracks at Hythe.

Thomas Copland married first Catherine (?) before 1808.

Thomas Copland was also known as Thomas Coupland (Thomas Coupland the dragoon often appeared in documents as Coupland).

Thomas Copland was a calvaryman in the Captain Harrison's Company of the 11th Royal Regiment of Veterans from 23 December 1811 to 24 July 1814 (This regiment was composed entirely of experienced cavalrymen, some as old as 51 but was unlikely to have been involved in front-line activity. It was disbanded with the imagined end of the Napoleonic Wars in April 1814 when Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba. They were stood down in the town of Hythe in Kent, which suggests a link to the 5th Dragoon Guards. The following year there was a major panic when Napoleon suddenly reappeared in France and was reinstalled as Emperor. Although most Army and Navy veterans were almost immediateky recalled to the colours, there is no evidence that Thomas Copland was called up for the Waterloo campaign of 1815. His name did appear, however, on a plaque honouring the Waterloo veterans of Wigtownshire which used to hang in the shoe shop in Wigtown, so he must have served in some capacity in the 11th Royal Regiment of Veterans. His discharge papers stated that first the regiment was being disbanded under a warrant from the War Office and secondly that he was subject to pulmonic affection by a crush from a horse while on duty. His age was given as both 39 and about 40.).

Thomas Copland and Catherine Copland and James Copland moved from Kent arriving at Mochrum, WIG, SCT, after 24 July 1814.

Thomas Copland was a coachman for the Maxwells of Monreith. who were major landowners about August 1814 at Mochrum, WIG, SCT, (Thomas is supposed to have worked for one of the Maxwells under whom he had served in the Dragoon Guards).

Thomas Copland lived in Old Luce, WIG, SCT, in June 1835.

Thomas Copland lived in Glen Luce, WIG, SCT, before 24 November 1835.

Thomas Copland was a farm labourer before 24 November 1835.

Thomas Copland married second Charlotte McDowell, daughter of Hugh McDowall, on 24 November 1835 at Glenjory in Old Luce, WIG, SCT. (The details as recorded in the Old Luce Parish Register are very basic, stating only that: "Thomas Copland and Charlotte McDowall , both of this village, were legally proclaimed in this congregation in order to marriasge, and no objecting being offered they were accordingly married in Glenjory by the Rev John McDowall on 24th November 1835".) Rev John McDowall conducted the wedding ceremony.
